Nothing can compare to our own natural beauty and uniqueness. I love my lips and would never want to change them. Today I decided to wear jeans, which I never wear, usually skirts and dresses and now I remember why. They rubbed and chaffed and my lips felt very sore. Luckily it was only for a few hours and I will remember not to wear them again. It should have been obvious really because my lips are sensitive to any sort of touch- but usually only in a good way for my pleasure. I agree with @eva here (not completely :) as a surgeon in the uk I am yet to meet one that is money hungry but don't doubt that they do exist).

I actually think porn is quite good a representating all types of shape and size - labia included, except things like playboy but I don't really class that as porn (not the type I like anyway). @eva is totally on the money about various comments on various sites. Some of them are truly hateful referring to women with full lips as " a pro", "well used", "disgusting" "needs surgery ASAP", "guts hanging out" - these are just some of the comments i have seen in the last few days. Once you get the idea in you head that you are "disgusting" and that is what men think of your body it becomes difficult to think otherwise. To be honest I can't really make any sense of these type of comments. Any man with any sort of experience with women knows that full lips are not uncommon and are completely gorgeous. So I am not sure why anybody would say such things about completely normal and beautiful labia. Is it misogyny, lack of experience, moronic behaviour or pure trolling - which is so easy to do whilst defending your right to freedom of speech yet hiding behind anonymity?

All various shape and sized of labia are beautiful to me as that is exactly as it should be from woman to woman. We should be celebrating our uniqueness.

I want to make another point. Those that know me well on this site may well start rolling their eyes and thinking I sound like a broken record, but I think it is important. Labia reduction (of the inner labia) is one type of surgery, but generally the one that gets mentioned. We rarely discuss labia majora augmentation which is also becoming more common where fat is injected to the outer lips. This is either done by artificial fillers or fat taken from the body (usually knees). It is often done together with labia reduction surgery or on its own. The very fact that artificial fillers can be injected without invasive surgery - expect to see it at the beauticians some time soon. Do we feel as strongly about this type of labia manipulation/mutilation?

The way you've described it, it sounds like women would opt for this type of procedure in the ever-illusive quest to hide their inner labia.

Call me crazy, but I hardly suspect this type of procedure is worth it, especially since women will undoubtedly pop-up offering to perform the procedure for lower cost (like the many who offer illegal botox injections and leave the unsuspecting patient scarred), which will inevitably cause many women to end up with deformed labia all in the hopes of trying to reduce the size of their inner labia. Total shame. . . =((

Agatha and Eva are on the money here. As to Agatha's question regarding labia majora augmentation, I frankly look at it in the same light as labia reduction. There are so many other methods of enlarging labia manually, and without surgery or injections, that it just seems ridiculous to me. Of course, there's always the chance of it coming out looking quite strange, especially if Agatha is correct about it becoming available in beauty salons without proper medical supervision. As it is, far too many things are permitted outside the medical arena, and far too many mistakes, including disforming infections are the result.

No I do not consider this to be genital mutilation, but rather modification. and as I've stated elsewhere, this is only partially due to my own preferences, but rather where I draw the line between the two.

Whereas mutilation is often found in parts of the world performed under violence and force, often under unsanitary conditions, and is usually permanent. Modification is almost exclusively an elective procedure, performed under clean, safe conditions, is accompanied by comparatively less painful conditions, ans is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay less permanent.

we're all familiar with all the aspects of FGM so I don't need to remind anyone of this. whereas I suspect that labial augmentation is a form of collagen injection. which is not nearly as permanent as some of us would like, and since it's done in a clinic, I'd suspect that there's at least a local applied.

@tempest_driver - I am very sad to hear you say this. Very sad indeed. As the pip breast implant scandal in europe has proved - goodness knows what rubbish can be put inside a women's body (if an artificial filler), fat injection is permanent. Sometimes it takes years to realise the risks, To me this is also genital mutilation as is labia reduction. Manipulation (as classified by the un) is stretching. Having worked in some African countries where it is practised it is not as harmless as some may think in my mind. (very different to what we may do)

Of course you are entitled to your opinion but I am also entitled to think that anyone who is delighted that a procedure with all the associated risks that can permanently change the shape of labia, on a site which encourages women to be happy and love their bodies is very short sighted indeed and is at odds with the spirit of the site. To me this is no different to someone supporting labia reduction because they personally prefer smaller lips. To me I think all labia, as nature intended are beautiful.

@tempest_driver: I see your point in the idea of it all.

My only concern is like @Agatha has pointed out, I think it leaves an area open for "abuse" in that there will be people who simply intend to earn a profit from the fact that many women will feel at odds about their labia, and may perhaps want to augment their lips in some way in order to change their appearance because of their insecurities about their labia.

I mean naturally, like you, I imagine there will be women who will do it strictly for the idea of it (like a clit or labia piercing for example), but I suspect that the vast majority of women will be unaware of the possible consequences/risks that can arise from it as Agatha pointed out.

My position is I think that the labia never have to be changed and that they are just right the way that they are if I'm honest -- sure you have women who will want to stretch their labia (massaging or manipulation for example) to make them longer, and then you have women who already have long labia and are ashamed of them. Then you have woman who have puffy labia, thick labia, small labia, etc. who all feel odd about them.

I personally believe it is this uniqueness that makes them all sexy -- because the woman didn't have to do anything to make them that way, instead they are already the way that they are; it gives me something to look forward to when I remove the panties or thong of a woman I'm about to lick because I can never know what her labia will look like. :D

If we were suddenly thrust into a society where women were having cosmetic/elective surgery to have their labia all look the same, that would be the equivalent to me of all women having breast implants -- yeah, they're nice the first few times you see them on a few different women, but after awhile you get tired of seeing them and prefer the natural ones. ;)

@labialover - I agree with you completely here. As you know being a dr I see first hand how vulnerable young women are to this type of thing. I don't know if it's lack of education, lack of self esteem, hearing comments, feeling different etc - I don't know, but so many don't feel normal and think they look ugly and disgusting (their
words). To be honest it's heartbreaking. The process for labia surgery here (although it does vary) is that they get referred by the family dr. This is where it gets complicated. If there is an obvious problem (torn labia - sometimes they split) it is more clear to recommend surgery. But it is more difficult when someone says they cause pain. I can't very well not refer them even if I think they are just saying that to get referred. Then again is it wrong to change something if you are unhappy with your appearance. Is it right to deny that right if the result is to make someone happy and confident. But very rarely is there something medically wrong and people can get fixated on poor body image. None of us are perfect (or all of us are perfect). These industries are ruthless and preying on insecurities and we do not know about long term risk yet. If things go wrong these clinics could not care. Do you know about the pip breast implant scandal? 47,000 British women were affected. More in France. All the women were fitted with silicone implants containing industrial grade chemicals never intended for medical use. Most had them done privately but the private clinics have said they can't do anything (and appear not to be insured). The nhs had said they will remove them (as there could be a serious risk if they leak) but they cannot afford to pay for new implants. The company that made the implants has gone out of business so no chance of getting refunds there.

Well, @agatha, I'm certainly sorry to be a disappointment to you, but not having your fountain of life experiences to draw from, and having no knowledge of the PIP scandal as it has not gotten any press here in the states i have not had the opportunity to form the same opinions as you.

I do recognize that we have to be very vigilant of what we put into our bodies, whether it be through consumption or by implantation. there is definitely the possibility for abuse, especially as something grows in popularity.

My opinions on where modification ends and mutilation begins have remained unchanged for as long as I have had such opinions, and I doubt they'll change any time soon.

It is wise to hear a different point of view and debate and discussion is important. I don't think there are clear right and wrongs more a line drawn in the sand but it is complicated as to where the line is drawn. I am in pretty much agreement with you on where mutilation begins. Even so I think this can be pretty complex. I see enough botched male circumcisions to know that even these are not without risk (and I am not anti this at all as my mother is Jewish)...but that's a completely different topic.

@sgtbert The problem is that being a dr I tend to be more aware of the risks as I usually see things when they are wrong and I have to fix them. When in reality complications are unusual and rare. I don't want to go off topic too much here and I am sure I saw a previous thread that discussed male circumcision. I will try and find it and if I am right add my comments there.

I was going to post in the "sex as nature intended it" thread as it seemed more relevant and makes some good points but that thread is now closed.

As was mentioned in the other thread, circumcision is not so common here in the UK. The nhs (national health service) only really carries them out for medical reasons although they are often done for religious reasons. Bleeding and infection are common problems, more serious complications include a decrease in sensation, damage to the urethra, septicaemia or accidental amputation of the head (very rare I am assured). The cases I have seen were the removal of too little of too much foreskin, and formation of abnormal scar tissue. I have seen enough of them to know that complication do occur, but it is a generally a straightforward procedure myself.

Anyone that decides that their son should be circumcised, or not, is doing what they think best. I am not religious so for me I wouldn't as I don't see any benefit. As a surgeon, for any procedure (but especially on a baby who cannot give their consent) we have to decide if a successful procedure would benefit the patient. So if it was for my child (omitting anything medical) I wouldn't as I can't see any reason for it. This is only my personal view.

I have had partners who are circumcised and not. It makes no difference to me at all. Part of the fun of being intimate with a new partner is the joy of discovering what they look like. The length, girth, cut/uncut, shaved etc. It all adds to the fun.
